2008 Arbor Day Poster Contest Winners Announced
First Place Poster
Advances to National Competition
Johnna Dunbar, a fifth-grade student at Mountain View Elementary/Middle School in Union, WV, is the West Virginia state winner in the 2008 Arbor Day National Poster Contest.
The contest, sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota, asked students to create a poster reflecting the theme "Trees are Terrific ... inside and out!" The annual contest educates children about the importance of trees and the benefits they provide us in our daily lives.
More than 700 fifth-grade students from thirty-one West Vriginia schools participated this year. As the winner, Dunbar will receive a $100 US Savings Bond from the West Virginia Forestry Assoc., a copy of her artwork, framed certificate and a tree will be planted in her honor at her school. Dunbar also is a finalist in the national contest. Mountain View Elementary/Middle School will also receive a check for $200 towards the purchase of art supplies. This award was made possible by a grant from the Oakland Foundation.
Second Place was awarded to Kat Buch from Middle Creek Elementary in Triadelphia, WV.
Third Place was awarded to Andrea Garrison from Limestone Elementary in Moundsville, WV.
Both the second and third place winners will receive a framed certificate, copy of their artwork and a tree will be planted in their honor at their respective schools. Both Middle Creek and Limestone Elementary will each receive a $150 check towards the purchase of art supplies.
